Konflikter, økonomiske chok, ekstreme klimaforhold og høje gødningspriser skaber tilsammen en fødevarekrise af hidtil uset omfang. Så mange som 783 millioner mennesker er usikre på hvor deres næste måltid kommer fra.
Nye opgørelser viser, at antallet af sultne mennesker i verden fortsætter med at stige og er nu nået op på 821 millioner i 2017 eller hvad der svarer til ét ud af ni mennesker, ifølge rapporten The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2018, som er blevet lanceret i dag.
I sin anden udgave dækker WFP’s Counting the Beans indeks nu 52 udviklingslande. Målet er at give forbrugere i rige, industrialiserede lande en idé om, hvor stor en andel af den daglige indkomst, som er nødvendig for at sikre et basalt måltid mad i de fattigere dele af verden.

Sådan hjælper WFP småbønder med at håndtere tab efter høst, og øger deres adgang til markeder.
I verdens rigere lande sker madspildet på tallerkenen. I de fattigere land er problemet anderledes. Her sker madspildet under produktionen, høsten, forarbejdningen og opbevaringen. Samtidig lider 815 millioner mennesker af sult.
Efter et støt fald over et årti er global sult nu stigende igen og rammer 815 millioner mennesker i 2016 eller 11 procent af verdens befolkning, fastslår en ny udgave af den årlige FN rapport om fødevaresikkerhed og ernæring i verden. Rapporten offentliggøres i dag.
