KØBENHAVN – FN’s World Food Programme (WFP) advarede i dag om en eskalerende humanitær krise drevet af udbredt vold og de langvarige påvirkninger af klimaforandringer, som har ramt Burkina Faso og nabolandene i det Centrale Sahel i Vestafrika.
Ud af de mere end 12 millioner mennesker vi støtter hver måned, udgør de den gruppe, der er i størst risiko for at sulte.
Sult er grusomt for alle, men ikke fuldstændig blind. Kvinder — især i krigstider — er lettere ofre for de lidelser, den medfører. Kvinder spiser sidst, og de spiser mindst.
”Sikkerhedsrådets afstemning i dag er et enormt skridt fremad i indsatsen for at bryde cirklen af konflikt og sult, som står i vejen for fremgang og fred for flere hundrede millioner mennesker,” siger David Beasley.
Udnævnelsen blev vedtaget af FN’s Generalsekretær António Guterres og Generaldirektør for FN’s Fødevare- og Landbrugsorganisation José Graziano da Silva, efter konsultation med WFP’s bestyrelse ved et særligt møde i WFP’s hovedsæde i Rom.

Når katastrofesituationer og humanitære kriser rammer, øges kvinders og pigers risiko for uønsket graviditet, usikre fødsler, seksuel vold og udnyttelse.
