Fødevareusikkerheden i Sydsudan er nu på det højeste niveau siden uafhængigheden i 2011.
Hungersnøden er blevet mindre efter en markant opskalering af den humanitære indsats. Situationen er dog stadig alvorlig overalt i landet, og næsten 7 millioner mennesker (60 procent af befolkningen) kæmper hver dag for at finde nok mad.
Konflikter, økonomiske chok, ekstreme klimaforhold og høje gødningspriser skaber tilsammen en fødevarekrise af hidtil uset omfang. Så mange som 783 millioner mennesker er usikre på hvor deres næste måltid kommer fra.
Den allerede alvorlige situation i Haiti, der har et af de højeste niveauer af fødevareusikkerhed i verden, blev forværret efter et jordskælv med en styrke på 7,2, der ramte regioner i den sydvestlige del af landet den 14. august 2021.
Når katastrofesituationer og humanitære kriser rammer, øges kvinders og pigers risiko for uønsket graviditet, usikre fødsler, seksuel vold og udnyttelse.
Den ekstraordinære langvarige tørke mellem 2020 og 2022 på Afrikas Horn har ikke efterladt tilstrækkelig tid til genopretning fra den ene udeblevne regnsæson til den næste, hvilket har medført at pastorale, agropastorale og landbrugssamfund har mistet deres husdyr og afgrøder.
WFP fortsætter med at give fulde rationer til omkring 3.100 af de mest sårbare flygtninge, så som ældre mennesker, mennesker med handicap og enlige mødre. En fuld ration består af en måneds forsyninger på omkring 17 kilo mad, sammensat af en daglig ration på 440 gram ris, 90 gram forskellige bælgfrugter, 25 gram vegetabilsk olie og salt.
