FN's World Food Programme er verdens førende humanitære organisation som assisterer 138 millioner mennesker i 83 lande. Gennem årene har adskillelige praktikanter fået indblik i én af verdens mest presserende problemstillinger — sult.
Beasleys besøg finder sted samtidig med, at Libanon står over for en tredobbelt krise forårsaget af eksplosionen, et økonomisk sammenbrud samt følgerne af COVID-19. I løbet af tre dages rundrejse i Libanon besøgte Beasley havnene i Beirut og Tripoli samt overværede fødevaredistributioner og uddeling af mad fra offentlige køkkener, som bestyres af WFP’s partner Caritas.

Cox’ Bazar har været en af WFP’s største indsatser i Asien siden august 2017, da mere end 700.000 Rohingya flygtninge begyndte af flygte fra undertrykkelse og vold i Rakhine-staten i Myanmar. Den danske regering var en af de første donorer til at støtte WFP’s katastrofeindsats blandt Rohingya flygtningene.
I delstaterne Borno, Yobe og Adamawa i det nordøstlige Nigeria, påvirker konflikt liv og levevilkår for millioner af mennesker. Over 4.4 millioner mennesker trues af en sultkatastrofe, og 320.000 børn er alvorligt fejlernæret.
Takket være lande som Danmark har WFP for nylig fået tildelt næsten US$180 millioner til omkring 60 landeoperationer, samtidig med at der ydes et vigtigt og påtrængende løft til livreddende indsatser i Syrien, Yemen, Den Centralafrikanske Republik og Den Demokratiske Republik Congo.
Mens rekordmange mennesker flygter fra krige og konflikter, vokser bekymringerne for, at det går den forkerte vej med at bekæmpe global sult.
”Engang vil Den Internationale Fødevaredag være en dag, hvor vi fejrer en fredelig verden uden mennesker som sulter.
Udnævnelsen blev vedtaget af FN’s Generalsekretær António Guterres og Generaldirektør for FN’s Fødevare- og Landbrugsorganisation José Graziano da Silva, efter konsultation med WFP’s bestyrelse ved et særligt møde i WFP’s hovedsæde i Rom.
