Det er ikke engang middag i Satara, en fjerntliggende landsby i Nigers sydvestlige Tillaberi-region, og termometeret er allerede tæt på 40 grader celsius. Den ubefæstede vej til landsbyen er ujævn og sandet.

Antallet af mennesker, der står over for akut fødevareusikkerhed (IPC/CH 3 eller værre), står til at stige til 265 millioner i 2020. Det er en stigning på yderligere 130 millioner – fra de 135 millioner i 2019 – som følge af de økonomiske konsekvenser af COVID-19 ifølge WFP’s prognose.
