Fødevareusikkerheden i Sydsudan er nu på det højeste niveau siden uafhængigheden i 2011.
Hungersnøden er blevet mindre efter en markant opskalering af den humanitære indsats. Situationen er dog stadig alvorlig overalt i landet, og næsten 7 millioner mennesker (60 procent af befolkningen) kæmper hver dag for at finde nok mad.
Det vurderes, at 313.000 mennesker har krydset grænsen ind i Bangladesh.
Siden 27. august har WFP forsynet flere end 68.800 mennesker med højenergikiks, i takt med de ankommer til de allerede overfyldte interimistiske lejre i Cox’s Bazar.
Bidraget fra Generaldirektoratet for Civilbeskyttelse og Humanitære Bistandsforanstaltninger på Europæisk Plan (ECHO) til WFP i Sydsudan vil gå til nødhjælp og ernæringstilskud til ca. 890.000 mennesker, der står over for sult som følge af konflikt og sæsonrelateret fødevareusikkerhed, herunder ca. 165.000 børn under 5 år og gravide og ammende kvinder.
WFP har nået ud til 300.000 mennesker med akut nødvendig fødevarebistand og har planer om at optrappe kraftigt for at nå ud til 900.000 mennesker - hvis finansieringen lykkes - efter de dødelige jordskælv, der ramte langs grænsen mellem Tyrkiet og Syrien den 6. februar.

Den allerede alvorlige situation i Haiti, der har et af de højeste niveauer af fødevareusikkerhed i verden, blev forværret efter et jordskælv med en styrke på 7,2, der ramte regioner i den sydvestlige del af landet den 14. august 2021.
Et stigende antal væbnede konflikter, forringet sikkerhed, fattigdom og klimaforandringer udgør en reel trussel mod landene i det centrale Sahel. Angreb på civile og infrastruktur og konflikt mellem staten og ikke-statslige væbnede grupper har ført til massive befolkningsfordrivelser i Burkina Faso, Mali og Niger.
Regeringer er FN's World Food Programmes (WFP) vigtigste partnere. Organisationen konsulterer med nationale og lokale myndigheder på hvert trin af planlægningsprocessen.
Hver og én af de 690 millioner, som sulter verden over, har ret til at leve fredeligt og uden sult. I dag har Den Norske Nobelkomite rettet det globale spotlight mod dem og på de ødelæggende menneskelige konsekvenser af konflikt. Klimaforandringer og økonomisk kollaps har yderligere forværret deres situation.
