Konflikter, økonomiske chok, ekstreme klimaforhold og høje gødningspriser skaber tilsammen en fødevarekrise af hidtil uset omfang. Så mange som 783 millioner mennesker er usikre på hvor deres næste måltid kommer fra.
Den allerede alvorlige situation i Haiti, der har et af de højeste niveauer af fødevareusikkerhed i verden, blev forværret efter et jordskælv med en styrke på 7,2, der ramte regioner i den sydvestlige del af landet den 14. august 2021.

Beasleys besøg finder sted samtidig med, at Libanon står over for en tredobbelt krise forårsaget af eksplosionen, et økonomisk sammenbrud samt følgerne af COVID-19. I løbet af tre dages rundrejse i Libanon besøgte Beasley havnene i Beirut og Tripoli samt overværede fødevaredistributioner og uddeling af mad fra offentlige køkkener, som bestyres af WFP’s partner Caritas.
Udnævnelsen blev foretaget af FN's generalsekretær António Guterres og generaldirektøren for FN's Fødevare- og Landbrugsorganisation QU Dongyu efter konsultationer med WFP's bestyrelse på et særligt møde i WFP's hovedkvarter i Rom.

Social beskyttelse kan hjælpe folk med at håndtere de risici de står over for, f.eks. fattigdom, social udstødelse, ulighed og fødevareusikkerhed, og beskytte de mest sårbare mod chok og stress gennem hele deres liv.
Konflikt og sult giver næring til hinanden i Den Demokratiske Republik Congo (DRC), som er en af de største sultkriser i verden. Usikkerhed spredt over flere provinser er den vigtigste drivkraft for befolkningsflytninger, som ofte fører til sult. Fødevareusikkerheden fortsætter med at vokse i DRC, og 26,4 millioner mennesker forventes at blive akut fødevareusikker i perioden januar-juni 2023.
