I delstaterne Borno, Yobe og Adamawa i det nordøstlige Nigeria, påvirker konflikt liv og levevilkår for millioner af mennesker. Over 4.4 millioner mennesker trues af en sultkatastrofe, og 320.000 børn er alvorligt fejlernæret.
Et stigende antal væbnede konflikter, forringet sikkerhed, fattigdom og klimaforandringer udgør en reel trussel mod landene i det centrale Sahel. Angreb på civile og infrastruktur og konflikt mellem staten og ikke-statslige væbnede grupper har ført til massive befolkningsfordrivelser i Burkina Faso, Mali og Niger.
FN's World Food Programme (WFP) er begyndt at levere fødevarer til hundredtusindvis af sultne mennesker i Sudan og håber at kunne udvide til flere områder på trods af enorme sikkerhedsproblemer, herunder voldsomme kampe der finder sted i dele af landet.
