Da jeg vågnede i morges i det smukke Rom, havde jeg svært ved at forestille mig, at byen omkring 400 AD gennemlevede en massiv hungersnød, der endte med at koste næsten 90% af befolkningen livet. Historieinteresserede forbinder noget andet med dette tidspunkt i historien: Begyndelsen på det romerske imperiums fald. Forårsagede hungersnøden faldet? Eller forårsagede faldet hungersnøden?
FN’s Fødevare- og Landbrugsorganisation (FAO) og FN’s World Food Programme (WFP) har i dag udgivet rapporten The Early Warning Analysis of Acute Food Insecurity Hotspots, som beskriver en farlig kombination af konflikt, økonomisk tilbagegang, ekstreme klimaforhold og COVID-19-pandemien, der skubber folk tættere på katastrofefasen af fødevareusikkerhed.

Når katastrofesituationer og humanitære kriser rammer, øges kvinders og pigers risiko for uønsket graviditet, usikre fødsler, seksuel vold og udnyttelse.
”For millioner af børn rundt omring i verden, er det måltid, som de modtager i skolen, det eneste måltid de modtager om dagen. Uden det vil de sulte, de risikerer at blive syge, droppe ud af skolen, og dermed miste deres bedste chance for at undgå fattigdom.
